Happy to Assist

Sitting at my desk pondering the secrets of the universe (namely, am I too old to wear a bikini), I took a break from my musings ("Betty, it's so desperate.") and dipped my toe into bags instead.  I like a big bag as I have an untold number of talismen that need to travel with me.  Phone.  Calendar (I know some of you think this is the same thing, but in my case it is not.) Hairbrush (that I rarely use as I brush my hair once in the morning and never again unless I am going out.) Three lipsticks the same toasty color; one red.  Glasses.  Supporting cast includes an ipad, a book, lacrosse shorts and/or anything for a school project and garlic or tarragon or something that is missing for dinner.

Meet Edie.  She arrived this afternoon and understood immediately that I need a little structure.  She can accommodate all my needs and realized intuitively not to hang around too long (meaning that with her shoulder strap extended she hits right at the hip rather than being unpleasant behind my back.)  I hate to spend money on these kinds of things and was delighted to find that she would come work for me for a mere $230.

It's ridiculous how much I rely on J. Crew.  If only he would advise me what to don poolside.

The site reads the cost as $288; a handy email coupon provided a discount.  No compensation, real or imagined, was received for this post.

  4. I could have had an "Edie" but paid a dental bill instead. Enjoy her, she's really sharp.

  5. Perfect! I am looking for something just like that but I really need to touch it first. Bummer, J.Crew is an hour away.

  6. My two cents in reference to a bikini

After having had children, or after age 30, women should not wear a bikini, even if they have a killer body. It is just unseemly, as is a man over 25 wearing a Speedo, even if he can, unless he is competing in the Olympics. A stylish and simple one piece has never been bettered for women.

  7. Great bag! In re age and bikinis, a good 3-way mirror can be relied on for the correct answer provided there is no chatter from the sales associate. I haven't been reading lately; hope the bikini question arises from plans to jet off to some delightful island!

  9. She's so pretty :) I used to find myself wondering am I too young to wear a one piece. It's pure laziness one my part. Now that I have a baby, it's totally kosher. If you can wear a bikini, I say wear a bikini!

  11. That is a beautiful bag - very elegant and practical - and I love the color. I also adore the fabric on the pictured chair!

  12. That chair fabric again - I love it so!!!! I remember you said previously it might not be in production any longer:-(

Yes, I rely embarrassingly, almost solely on J.Crew as well. Thank God for it! However, no bikinis any longer pour moi. 45 and slim enough to MAYBE pull it off but would rather err on the side of caution.

  13. I ordered an Edie for my smart, chic daughter working in design in NYC. Now, thanks to two smart, chic women, I am going to have to order one for myself! Best,Tracey

  14. love it. It's so you. and love the fabric on the chair.

(oh come on. really. you could definitely wear a bikini.) Some of the most major rocket bodies in my town belong to women over 40.

  15. Helen Mirren looks fab in a bikini. Me, no chance. Purses on the other hand, definitely. Love the color of your new bag. It feels amazing doesn't it? A new purse always holds such promise. I'm aging myself, but it reminds me of the feeling of getting a new cigar box from my dad at the beginning of the school year to hold my fresh new crayons, pencils and glue.

  16. Love the bag! But please tell me the designer and fabric pattern on your beautiful blue and white chairs. I must have!

  17. Bikini or not depends entirely on your body regardless of age although a certain level of sophistication should be taken into account for the more mature and cosmopolitan woman. A perfect bikini for a woman who is looking for that classic look is featured this month online in Matchbook magazine pg. 42. Norma Kamali's Bikini top and briefs... She also has some beautiful one pieces if you can't take the plunge (so to speak).

  19. Is the Edie the "pecan" color? I want one but want to be sure of the color! Thank you!

  20. I'm with Quatorze on the bikini issue. I've seen photos of great looking 45+ celebrities wearing them and think they look like they are trying too hard, when a chic one piece would be so much classier. Except Jennifer Aniston, she'll be able to wear one until she's 80.
